In-Conversation Event

Last week, I did a book launch event in conjunction with Newbery Honor-winning author Andrea Wang. We discussed race, identity and authorship in the context of her new middle grade novel: Summer at Squee.

Andrea's book includes a number of Chinese transracial adoptee characters, so the challenges of a non-adopted author representing that experience formed part of our conversation. I met Andrea last year at an Asian American writers' retreat and we discussed the book as she was writing and revising. We continued that conversation in our zoom.

Huge thanks to Andrea for inviting me and Leah Werther and the Asian American Caucus of the NCTE for hosting! It was a wonderful event and you can watch it here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRXgsSaZ2Fw
